Caribbean
People from the Caribbean began settling in Manchester in significant numbers after the Second World War, particularly during the Windrush era from the late 1940's onwards. Drawn by employment opportunities in industries such as manufacturing, transport, construction and healthcare, many migrants made their homes in areas like Moss Side. Although they often faced discrimination in housing, employment and public life, they built strong communities through churches, social clubs, businesses and community organisations.
Over time, Caribbean Mancunians made important contributions to the city's cultural, social and development. Influencing music, food, sport and the arts. Today several generations of people of Caribbean heritage form an important part of Manchester's diverse population and their legacy continues to be celebrated through events such as Windrush Day and the Manchester Caribbean Carnival.
